WEATHER
CONDITIONS
Weather conditions: |
| Snowmelt was late, and cool weather with frequent precipitation and fog established for first 3 weeks of July. Clear windless weather predominated during August, thus making it the warmest month of summer, and then expanded to the first half of September. Summer snowstorms did not occur.

Breeding conditions:
Scarce Arctic Foxes undertook a single breeding attempt, that failed: a den with pups that had died from starvation was found. Snowy Owls and Pomorine Skuas did not nest and were fewer than usial. Density of breeding waders did not differ from usial, and breeding was relatively successful in most common species. Broods of Knots, Turnstones, Grey Plovers and Dunlins were fairly numerous in late July; broods of Pectoral Sandpiper and Red Phalarope were met few times, and broods of Red-necked Stints - twice.

Rodent dynamics:
| Numbers of both lemming species were extremaly low throughout the whole island: 1 Collared Lemming caught per 300 trap-days and 1 Siberian Lemming caught during absolute count at a 4 hectare plot. Lemmings and their tracks were mostly registered in the settlement and near field stations.
